Blockbuster to declare bankruptcy

Blockbuster today told the major studios today that it plans to declare bankruptcy in September.  Considering the studios make a chunk of money from Blockbuster rentals and that Blockbuster will need their support to come successfully out of Bankruptcy.  Bankruptcy will allow it to restructure its 1 nearly $1 billion in debt and get out of leases for its 500-800 most unproductive stores.  According to LA Times the studios are generally supportive of Blockbuster’s plan for bankruptcy, since they would like to see Blockbuster which has been a good client for them, remain a competitor to Netflix and Redbox.

Netflix App on iPhone and iPod Touch

Netflix announced today in a press release that they have released an app that allows iPhone and iPod Touch users to stream Netflix movies directly to their devices.  The app will be free and available to any Netflix customer as long as they order at least the basic $8.99 Netflix package.

Cablevision to launch Addressable Ads in all markets in 4th quarter

Starting in the fourth quarter of 2010, Cablevision plans to let advertisers deliver different advertisements to individual households based on unique information for that household such as income.

This will let advertisers deliver slightly different ads to different customers or only target one specific demographic market while another advertiser advertises to a different market.  Cablevision hopes this will allow them to generate increased commercial revenue since advertisers who have niche products that wouldn’t appeal to Cablevision’s entire market would now spend advertising money to reach specific groups.

The system is already live and being tested in Brooklyn and Bronx reaching over 500,000 customers.
