Author Topic: Cablevision Adds 5 More High Definition Channels (Read 16398 times)

This just in to the www.CableRant.com newsroom...

Cablevision will be adding 5 additional HD channels to their lineup. This brings the total to 65 HD channels.

The new additions are as follows

VH1-HD
MTV-HD
Fuse-HD
CMT-HD
NHL-HD

Our sources tell us that Cablevision will use their traditional 3 day rollout, starting on Tuesday, October 14th.

That's pretty weak. NHL-HD would be the only one that I am remotely interested in if they have their highlight show in HD. Of course that would require me to order the SportsPak.

Maybe the Nhl Network will become available to everybody when they add the HD feed. They did that with the golf channel when they added versus/golf hd.

I'm surprised they would pick these 5 in particular - from what I've seen, VH-1, CMTV and MTV have very little HD programming - the old MHD (or now Palladia) would have been a better HD music choice. I'm not sure about FUSE.

Personally, I would prefer more watchable channels in HD - USA, History, A&E, Sci-Fi, CNBC+ (especially given the recent market turmoil), Fox Business News, HD Net (& HD Net Movies), Smithsonian, MGM and the Premier Movie Channel suites (ie: HBO, Showtime, Starz, Cinemax etc.).

Having said that, any HD addition is good news - I just hope the programming is in HD more than not.

A lot of it has to do with contracts for a group of channels owned by the same company, because they will get better rates if they show more than one from the same company.
VH1-HD, MTV-HD, CMT-HD are all owned by Viacom.
They also own Nickelodeon-HD and Comedy Central-HD which means it is probably not a coincidence they are picking up these three more channels from them.

I'm starting to question the validity of this press release.
At this moment, NOBODY has confirmed it or reported it. People within Cablevision tell me that they never heard about it. And the only 'talk' has been more HBO channels in HD prior to Christmas.

We'll have to sit and wait.

On the digital guide channel there is a panel ad that says 5 new HD services will be added on 10/16/08. It doesn't say what they are though.

Also, MOJO could be gone by 12/1. So we may have net gain of 4 channels.

Yeah but you can't fault CV for MOJO closing up shop. The channel simply won't exist.

MOJO, of course isn't Cablevisions fault. But they beyyer replace it with another channel.

They are commited to adding MLB Network SV and MLB NetworkHD on 1/1/09.

That sucks. I actually liked a few shows on MOJO. I think not having a Standard Definition counterpart may have hurt them.

my guess is when versus/golf split they will continue to carry both, some time in december

Many of the channels added in the last three months have little or any actual HD pogramming. This has allowed Cabelvision to claim increases in HD without giving up additional bandwith space. You should never judge a book by its cover.
